Chicago Summer Fun: Top 5 Must-Do Activities
Chicago, oh, it is a great town, a place with world-class architecture and super deep-dish pizza, yet it’s extra inviting when summertime rolls around. So, what should you do when the weather turns nice and the city opens up for the season? Here’s my short list of favorite activities for summer in the Windy City.
1. Stroll along the Magnificent Mile
You know, The Magnificent Mile, also just called “The Mag Mile,” is, in some respects, Chicago’s most well-known street. Actually, this stretch of North Michigan Avenue, from the Chicago River up to Oak Street, comes alive in the summertime. So, people, they are outside, strolling along this famous street. I mean, I love it, that a simple walk can be so amazing! Maybe grab an iced coffee, do a little people-watching, and just enjoy all the buzz of summer in Chicago.
2. Relax at Chicago’s Famous Beaches
Who thinks of Chicago and, literally, thinks of beaches? Arguably, me. But you know what? That is just what I love, that I can enjoy the shoreline. Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach are almost must-sees. I mean, honestly, they are sandy stretches along Lake Michigan. You get skyline views along with a tan. Maybe bring a book, definitely bring some sunscreen, and claim a spot on the sand. You could actually feel like you are at the ocean, just with massive buildings in the background instead.
3. Visit Millennium Park
Millennium Park, actually, it’s more or less one of the centers of fun in Chicago. That Cloud Gate sculpture—everyone just calls it “The Bean”—is, arguably, one of the more photographed spots in the city. Also, you can cool off at Crown Fountain, maybe catch a concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, or simply chill out in Lurie Garden. Often, there are free events, too, especially during summer, that just might be worth checking out. So, it is perfect for a daytime visit, but I, as a matter of fact, feel that nighttime is equally appealing.
4. Architecture River Cruise
Alright, if you like boats and structures, you might think about checking this one out. The Chicago Architecture River Cruise, it’s one of those relaxing and pretty ways to view the city’s notable buildings from the water. So, there’s usually a guide pointing out architectural landmarks along the way, like the Wrigley Building and the Marina City towers. You’re, like your floating classroom, gliding along the Chicago River, seeing buildings you wouldn’t normally notice from the street.
5. Explore Navy Pier
So, Navy Pier, you see it on postcards of the town all the time, more or less. That it’s this lively spot stretching out into Lake Michigan is definitely a draw to people. Actually, there are attractions, maybe some rides like the Ferris wheel, also restaurants and shops. In some respects, they often have fireworks displays over the water in the summer. Just a fun place for a bit of activity and definitely photo-ops of the Chicago skyline.
