You will find that warm sunshine, balmy breezes, and a calendar jam-packed with events make it the perfect time to explore this South Carolina jewel. That is to say that to help you get the most out of your visit, I’ve compiled a list of the top five things you simply cannot miss.
1. Step Back in Time: Historic Charleston Walking Tour
You see, no trip to Charleston really feels complete without wandering its historic streets, that is to say you feel the history there. That is why a walking tour is that the perfect way to absorb the stories and scenery that this beautiful city offers. You can stroll past grand antebellum houses, cobblestone lanes, and pretty gardens while knowledgeable guides share tales of pirates, patriots, and presidents, alright. That tour might take you past Rainbow Row, that collection of colorful historic houses, or to Fort Sumter, that famous site where the Civil War began. Really consider it, and wear comfortable shoes!
That is to say, I remember once, on my very first tour of Charleston, like you, standing in awe before the Edmondston-Alston House, looking out over the harbor. And just listening to the guide describe the families who lived there and the events they witnessed, like it felt like stepping back in time, and that’s what makes Charleston so special. Arguably, these places truly are an adventure waiting to happen.
2. A Taste of the South: Charleston Food Festival
Now, if you are a foodie, that the Charleston Food Festival is often what you might describe as your paradise, seriously. Every June, the city plays host to an amazing festival of culinary delights that are a total explosion to the senses, like some type of epic tasting event. Top chefs from around the region gather to showcase their talents, so you will get a chance to sample some truly creative and yummy dishes. You’ll want to sink your teeth into traditional Southern fare, or you might experience contemporary creations. And just picture yourself sipping sweet tea, savoring shrimp and grits, or perhaps indulging in a slice of key lime pie. Yum!
Like your average bloke, my taste buds are all too ready for what delicacies Charleston has in store. In fact I chatted with this old bloke the other day, who travels from country to country sampling all the best food events, so I can very well guarantee he would say it’s among some of the tastiest events. That bloke couldn’t rave enough about the quality of the seafood and how inventive some of the chefs were with old recipes. Right, do come hungry, that is!
3. Beach Bliss: Isle of Palms
That the South Carolina coast, that, has tons of nice beaches that are sure to offer some solace after all that delicious eating! It’s like this particular one’s name says it all, too. In fact just a short drive from downtown Charleston is the Isle of Palms, so the island’s sandy shores and rolling waves really offer what many might call an oasis. Spend your day swimming, sunbathing, or simply relaxing with a good book, it might feel like you’re set for quite the chillax. Or if you are feeling a little more adventurous, maybe try some water sports, such as paddle boarding or kayaking.
Yet, my family and I visited Isle of Palms last summer, basically, just to get away from things. My kids seriously enjoyed building sandcastles while I took the opportunity to soak up some sunshine and enjoy that lovely sound of the waves. Very few can say that something can top hearing the beach, very.
4. Waterfront Wonder: South Carolina Aquarium
That South Carolina Aquarium is the very place to explore all sorts of sea creatures. Just located on the Charleston harbor, it’s home to thousands of aquatic animals, like those you just cannot see anywhere else! Walk by numerous cool displays, and you’ll come by all types of aquatic friends; pretty starfish, to massive sharks. To go through the touch tank is definitely worth it if you get the chance.
I think this trip particularly made my children giddy; my young daughter even held a crab, so be sure to not pass up that awesome opportunity, honestly! This particular outing is seriously great to teach kids some science, that in and of itself really helps!
5. Shop ‘Til You Drop: Charleston City Market
Really feel Charleston’s energy through walking around the City Market, since it is the real shopping centerpiece for the community, alright. You may pick some nice stuff there as you shop, from handmade crafts to all varieties of artwork. Now there you might grab sweetgrass baskets woven by local artisans, so, like, grab some to remind yourself what South Carolina truly feels like once you leave. Yet this local experience really adds to the experience overall! Like the treasures are all over, waiting for you to pick them up!
I remember getting my mother a hand crafted, very decorative fan here. My mother, like your mother, truly adores the small intricate beauties the local artisans put out. This souvenir is one she cannot seem to go without displaying. By the way she cherishes her beautiful fan. Like your parent or mine, a nice momento is definitely very high up in the happiness heirarchy.
