Cancun: Is It Really a Great Vacation Spot?

Cancun: Is It Really a Great Vacation Spot?

Cancun Beach

So, you’re thinking about Cancun for your next escape? Well, you’re not the only one! Cancun gets a lot of hype, and very understandably so, it has these bright blue waters, lovely warm sand, and a whole bunch of stuff to do. But is it actually a great place to spend your precious vacation time and dollars? Let’s get to it. The answer, basically, depends on what *you’re* looking for in a getaway and what matters most to you.

The Beaches and the Beauty

Cancun Beach Beauty

When it comes to that picture-perfect Caribbean beach scene, Cancun pretty much nails it. I mean, really, those powdery soft, white sand beaches you see in magazines? Cancun has them. The water is super clear and turquoise blue. That said, something you will see that those magazine shots leave out, because let’s face it that would’t be a good advert is that during peak season, though, expect crowds. Lots and lots of folks soaking up the sun and splashing around.

The Hotel Zone has a string of beaches that are generally well-maintained and calm, very unlike some shorelines elsewhere. Head north for shallower waters, that might be what you want especially, if you’re with little ones, you know? So, Playa Delfines is pretty known for its awesome views and big waves (hello, photo op!), and yet swimming there could be kind of risky. The bottom line is that Cancun’s beaches really are fantastic, alright but be prepared to share the sand, you know?

All-Inclusive Resorts: Are They Worth It?

Cancun All-Inclusive Resorts

Cancun and all-inclusive resorts, it’s a package deal, really. I mean, it feels like a huge amount of visitors hit Cancun *because* of the all-inclusives. But should you pick one? You pay one price, right?, and suddenly all your food, drinks, activities (often), are included. For sure, this can make budgeting easier and makes things pretty simple for just chilling out. Yet, here is a counter-point: it can get, maybe, same-y? A bit repetitive? Staying inside one resort. Now that might work great if you have a young family. After all keeping kids happy can be intense, am I right?!.

Keep in mind, anyway, that all-inclusive resort quality definitely varies. Some are luxury experiences with gourmet food and fancy cocktails; other all inclusives, well, are more on the basic side, to be frank. Research before you book so, it could well pay to spend a bit more, too, to get quality.

Is Cancun Safe for Tourists?

Cancun Tourist Safety

Safety. This often crops up, doesn’t it, when chatting about Mexico, too it’s almost a given. Cancun is usually pretty safe for visitors, yeah but, just like any popular tourist area, some things go on that you probably ought to watch out for. Tourist zones generally get pretty good security and police presence. Pickpocketing and petty theft, things like that, may happen, so, be aware, basically of your surroundings. Going off the beaten path, or outside tourist zones alone at night, could increase risks, and yet risks are pretty small, alright?

Some people stress, too, over reports about cartel violence, you know? This is sad and worrying, alright, it is and while that kind of trouble very rarely affects tourists *directly*, seeing too many stories may put some people off. The fact is that keeping up to date with current travel advisories is very wise, and using common sense goes a long way.

Beyond the Beach: Activities and Excursions

Cancun Excursions Activities

Cancun isn’t *just* a beach – which is probably a relief for some people! If you feel restless just laying on the sand (that happens to me!), good news!, plenty of choices are on offer, too it’s almost endless!. Get wet, in some absolutely brilliant water activities such as snorkeling, jet-skiing, or parasailing. You could also visit the Mayan ruins nearby like Chichen Itza or Tulum, very stunning. Taking day trips to nearby islands, like Isla Mujeres, offers some respite from Cancun’s craziness too.

Explore cenotes (natural sinkholes), something that would certainly appeal to me, these have cool, clear waters that are awesome for swimming and diving. Loads of tour operators can arrange trips. Researching and comparing options helps make sure that you’re getting reasonable prices and solid experiences.

Cost of a Cancun Vacation

Cancun Vacation Cost

Let’s face it, trips cost money! How expensive is Cancun, you ask? Very, very well, it depends. I mean, it’s all over the place. Sticking in an all-inclusive will probably make your outlay more predictable, as pointed out, and pre-booking helps get lower rates. Visiting during the off-season, sometime between late spring and early winter – avoids school holidays- saves some money on both flights and lodgings plus you might get quieter beaches too.

Eating outside the resorts costs less, I’m saying but doing so involves taxis or local transport, of course, yeah? Shop around for activities to get the better deals, too, and check if your resort has free options to consider. In short, a Cancun vacation *can* be cheap if you want, yet luxury is easy to find as well!
