Alcatraz, Muir Woods & Sausalito Tour: Is it Worth the Hype?

Alcatraz, Muir Woods & Sausalito Tour: Is it Worth the Hype?

Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and Sausalito

Planning a trip to San Francisco? You’re likely looking at an Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and Sausalito tour. These tours get talked about a great deal, so it’s almost impossible to skip over them while searching for experiences near the Bay. That combination tour, of Alcatraz Island, Muir Woods National Monument and the sweet, seaside town of Sausalito, well it sounds amazing. But is that popular trip actually worth your time and money? I recently went on one, and I am happy to report on all the ups, and some of the things that I thought, well, could be better. So, prepare for a detailed look at that trip, to give you all the information you might need to make your own choice.

What’s Included in the Alcatraz, Muir Woods & Sausalito Tour Package

Alcatraz Tour

Before we jump into the experience, let’s consider what this kind of tour usually provides. These things are quite typical for the Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and Sausalito day trip package, anyway. You usually get:

  • Alcatraz Island Ticket: That includes the ferry ride there and back, plus entry to the prison itself. Keep in mind, this ticket is the main reason many folks book this trip; you may already be discovering that Alcatraz tickets can be quite difficult to get on your own.
  • Muir Woods National Monument Entry: You’ll gain admission to see those giant redwood trees. Because getting there can be a hassle, this inclusion can be rather significant.
  • Sausalito Visit: Free time is provided to walk around, shop, and eat in that pretty bayside town. The tour may handle the transportation there.
  • Transportation: Usually, transport is handled by a bus or van between each location. This solves quite a few parking problems, especially around Muir Woods, which can be tight.
  • Guided Tour Options: Some packages provide guided tours at Muir Woods or Sausalito. Others provide just transportation and tickets, and you explore on your own. You might prefer the latter.

You have to review what each package gives you. Those options really change from company to company, but this gives you a foundation of what’s out there.

First Stop: The Haunting History of Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island

Okay, now here comes the juicy stuff! Let’s explore Alcatraz first. Now, very possibly, this segment is the heart of that trip for loads of people. The ferry ride to “The Rock” gives you breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline, so be ready with your camera. Once you arrive, so too it’s pretty much impossible not to feel the chilling history all around you. The audio tour, featuring former inmates and guards, is super effective; you’ll probably get really caught up in those stories. I found myself stopping frequently, to just try to soak it all in. Remember that that former federal penitentiary held infamous criminals like Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz”. Exploring those cell blocks, the mess hall, and the solitary confinement area is, clearly, a sobering experience, anyway. Just picture the lives that were lived — and often wasted — in that very place. Be certain to wear comfy shoes, you’ll do an alright bit of walking.

Insider tip: Book that tour early! Because Alcatraz tickets often sell out weeks in advance, you may already know this! Also, consider the first tour of the day, so it’s possible to dodge at least some of the crowds, for a quieter experience. Getting an Alcatraz ticket through an organized tour can actually take the pressure off.

Step into Nature’s Cathedral: Muir Woods National Monument

Muir Woods

After the intensity of Alcatraz, Muir Woods offers a really stark, complete contrast. And that is pretty lovely. Stepping beneath those towering redwood trees actually feels like walking into a natural cathedral, in a way. The light filters through the canopy above, creating a calming, almost magical atmosphere. Walking those trails and viewing trees that are hundreds of years old causes one to feel, well, small! Be sure to take some time to breathe in the fresh, forest air and enjoy the stillness. However, this place is really popular, like, super popular. The crowds can, at times, diminish the tranquility. So, plan accordingly, I guess. Try to go on a weekday, or later in the afternoon, if that’s possible, anyway. Also, transportation to Muir Woods is often a hassle. Parking reservations are now needed, which could be another hurdle you don’t maybe even want to deal with. Again, because you might like to skip those issues, a tour package that handles that logistics can really simplify your visit. Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes; those trails can be uneven in places. Oh, and maybe, so too it’s San Francisco and all, bring a jacket — it can get cool and damp in the woods, in that location. The towering trees block quite a bit of sunlight.

Sausalito: A Taste of the Mediterranean in California

Sausalito

Sausalito, that final stop on the tour, provides a delightful change of scenery. This picturesque waterfront town is like a bit of the Mediterranean right in California! Actually, I found it so enjoyable, anyway. The town provides a fantastic, relaxed atmosphere, and offers awesome views of the San Francisco skyline and Alcatraz Island. I appreciated just walking along the waterfront, browsing the art galleries, and looking at the cute shops. Lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants is very advisable, I can say! (Expect tourist prices, mind you.) A good option would be to wander through the streets, before heading back to San Francisco. Alternatively, you might consider taking a ferry back. Those ferries leave regularly, and supply yet another amazing view of the bay. You will want to confirm that your tour package includes a ferry ticket. It could be an extra cost! Check the timetables, too, I recommend!

What Could Be Better: Things to Consider

Group Tour

Now, with every tour, some parts could possibly be improved, of course. One really big thing to keep in mind is that these combo tours can feel rushed. It’s certainly a lot to squeeze into one day! Giving appropriate time to each location could be a real difficulty. You may want to determine what you care about, to determine if that quicker pace is OK with you. If you want a more relaxed experience, so too it’s probably wiser to visit each spot on separate days, or, well, skip one completely. Group sizes can be a factor, too. Bigger groups can feel less personal, and could slow things down. If that is really important to you, then look for tours offering smaller group sizes, it is what I recommend!

The transportation, so I learned, can sometimes be a little tedious. I recall, on my tour, sitting on a bus for a while while folks got picked up and dropped off. If you hate being on a bus for an extended amount of time, investigate if there are alternatives (even if that means you only do, say, the Alcatraz/Sausalito combo, with the ferry connecting them!). Finally, consider what’s actually included. Some cheaper tours might skimp on the guided experiences, and only get you from A to B. Those experiences are probably still worth it to you, yet be aware.
