Mulu Caves

This famous national park is listed into the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization) World Heritage sites since November, 2000, with its impressive caving system within the park that will surely worth for visit. The Mount Mulu National Park is named after the second highest mountain in Sarawak, the Mount Mulu (Gunung Mulu). It stretches to quite a large area of approximately 544sq km, and is said to have the largest cave chamber in the world.

Visitors are only allowed to enter the caves in the National Park in the guidance of a Licensed Park Guide. There are a total of four Show Caves (caves that have facilities of concrete pathways and artificial lighting), namely Deer and Langs Cave, Clearwater Cave and Wind Cave.

From the Park’s headquarters, visitors need to take a walk of 3 kilometer at the Rainforest Discovery Walkway through the forest which will lead to the Deer Cave. The name “Deer cave” came from the story of a deer that was always spotted inside the cave and attracted the local huntsman to hunt for it. It is said that the cave passage of the Deer Cave is the largest ever known to man. There are a total of twelve species of bats to be found in this cave.

The West part of this cave is the habitat for the millions of horseshoes and wrinkle-lipped bats, while the East End section of the cave is full of hollow stalactites which the environment and temperature is preferred by the naked bat. Therefore, it’s common for obvious smell of bat droppings within this Deer Cave. Once exit from the Eastern side of the Deer Cave, what comes next is a flourishing land of forest called “The Garden of Eden”, and in close proximity there is this beautiful Adam and Eve’s Showers.

Situated 100 meters away from the Deer Cave is the Langs Cave. Comparably smaller in size however eye-catching too with its uniquely decorated wall with long shawls and rim stone pools on the floor. The Langs Cave is the smallest among all the show caves in the state of Sarawak.

There are two options to reach the Clearwater Cave, either through the 3.8 kilometer Moonmilk Cave Track or visitors may opt for the longboat ride from the Park Headquarters at a small fees of RM30 for round trip.

The Clearwater Cave holds the one of the largest underground river system in the world. The river has gone through a route of more than 170km to reach to this cave. There are enormous logs placed on the river banks and wedged under stones here. Swimming is only allowed outside the cave but not inside the cave. Whereas, the Wind Cave which is situated nearby is well-known for the cool temperature inside. Do get more information about the entry fees into different caves as well as the transportation charges at the Park’s Headquarters.
